What exactly is a mentor?

Recent studies show that mentoring a child can significantly improve their academic, social and economic prospects and help establish their life trajectory in a more positive way.

What exactly is A mentor? A mentor is simply defined as a caring, adult who devotes time to a young person… Although mentors can fill any number of different roles, all mentors have the same goal in common: to help young people become better educated, achieve their potential and discover their strengths by sharing fun activities and exposing them to new experiences. A mentor encourages positive choices, promotes high self-esteem, supports academic achievement, and introduces the young person to new ideas.

Educating our youth is one of my biggest passions in life. I have now been working with Rowland Hall’s Health and nutrition classes for two years by speaking to students about making good choices when it comes to their growing bodies, and the nutrition it takes to support that growth. It’s only a few hours every couple of months but I know that it makes a difference.

You can do as much or as little as you want. Anything from mentoring a child full time through one of the many local organizations to calling a local school and asking about speaking about a subject/field that you are an expert in.
